Lesson Title: Guessing game: Animals
Class Description: The class is designed for  primary students who are in their second year of English learning . They are about 10 years old. They learned animal words last lesson. It’s a 20 minute activity.
Objective:
l        Create a friendly atmosphere, let the students enjoy the process of learning.
l        Get the children to practise the new sentences“What’s your favourite animal?
Do you like …? Yes, I do. No , I don’t.”
l        Let the children review the animal words that they have learned in a meaningful situation.
Materials:
²       20 cards with different animal pictures
²       cards with the new sentences
²       some chalk and a blackboard
Procedure:
1)      Explaination
T: OK, children. Let’s play a guessing game. First we should divide our class into four groups. Then each group will choose one student to hold up the card. He or she can see the card, but the other students can’t. Then he or she can describe this animal , but can’t mention this word.  The rest of group should use the new sentences to guess. If the answer is right, please write it on the blackboard, this group will get a star .The more right answers , the more stars. So that group will be the winner.
2)  Give an example: Let’s begin from Group 1. You should ask the student who come to the front“What’s your favourite animal?” If the student is holding the card with an ant, he or she can describe it like this :“It is small, but it can carry big things. And it is brown…” The students of Group 1 can ask “ Do you like ants?” The student holding the card can answer: “Yes, I do” and write the word on the blackboard. The group gets one star.
3) Divide the class into four groups and every group should choose one student to come to the front . Students will take turns each round.
4) Play games in groups.
5) Check and give an assessment.(Groups receive an animal word to name their group as the winning, for example, Butterfly, Butterfly, No. 1 !)
Rationale:
Games are enjoyable and motivating for children and adults alike. They give the players an objective to work towards and a feeling of satisfaction when they are successful. In a game, the students have to use the language to communicate with each other. Therefore during games, they learn and practise the language unconsciously.    Games also provide a meaningful context for children to learn language. They are fun and can involve even shy children . When children play games , they will have more opportunities to repeat and practise the  language they have already learnt. Language learning is hard work, but games can make language learning more memorable and accessible in a fun way. Games can give children more chances to be exposed to the language and practise the language.
Playing games is an effective way to review vocabulary. In this game, the students want to win , so they use English in class acitively and they don’t mind making mistakes. They guess again and again. During the process of guessing, the students ask with a rising pitch, and answer with a falling pitch. Maybe intonation patterns are difficult , instead get them to know the rule, the important for the children is getting them to use in a meaningful situation. The teacher should guide them to feel it every time. Don’t tell them, don’t teach them, just involve them.
In China, there are many students in the class, so the teachers often play team games , it can promote group work and social skills.
