Levels of English Teaching

Ⅰ.Introduction
    In September,2007, I began to teach Class 1,Grade 2. When they were  in Grade 1,their average marks were at least ten scores lower then the highest class. The students who did well in English were only a few, most of the students were not good at English. Just in the same class, there was a wide gap between the students. If let them study together, the good students couldn’t eat fully, and the general students improved less, the backward students couldn’t absorb the knowledge. Both the way “low beginning, little steps” and the way “grasp two ends, improve the middle” only faced some of the students. So I tried some ways, but very little effect was produced.
Ⅱ.Raising the way to solve the problem
Classroom teaching is the main position of quality education. To improve classroom teaching, teachers must pay attention to study the teaching program and texts, also they must study the students’ actual
Conditions. Comrade Den Xiaoping said, “To teach the whole class as well as possible.” Teaching must face all the students, so to study students’ actual conditions becomes especially important. Preparing lessons only on the base of know the individual differences, we can get a good teaching result. And to really raise teaching quality widely, the key thing is how to treat students’ individual differences, then we can resolve the contradiction between the unity of teaching aims and students’ actual differences. After half a year’s teaching, I decided that teaching in levels is a good method of resolving this problem.
Ⅲ.Three levels and reason
   According to the actual situation of this class, I decided to divide all the students into 3 levels, Level A, Level B and Level C.
Level A: Study forward of teaching program, choose to read some extra materials, do some improving exercises, do some reading, writing and speaking every day.
Level B: Reach teaching program, learn the text well.
Level C: Nearly reach teaching program, grasp the important language points, do some easy exercises.
  Thus the general arrangement is in good order, each level’s students’ enthusiasm can be aroused. Teachers may teach students in accordance with their  aptitude, try their best to make students of each level improved.
            And at that time students have learnt English for one year and a half. After my guide, quite a few students can learn English by themselves. They can learn English well after the teacher direct them a little. My students have several reference books, but they haven’t used them fully.
Ⅳ.Getting ready for dividing 3 levels
In the parents’ meeting and class meeting , I introduced aims, meaning of teaching in levels to students’ parents and students .On the premise of not hurting the enthusiasm of students, they can enter their names for different levels. There are 42 students in this class, the number of the students who want to be in Level A is 19, who want to be in Level B 17 and who want to be in Level C is 6.Six in Level C is just OK,19 in Level A is too many. They had to have a test about listening, speaking, reading and writing, at last the first 12 students became the members of Level A. Students all felt a heartfelt admiration. Every student wrote down their opinions.
Ⅴ.Correct ways of teaching in levels
A.        Arrangements of class hours ,seats and aims
1.        Teaching in levels 3 or 4 class hours a week. Every level will have 1 or 2 training after class every week.
2.        Before class, students of the same level sit together.

B.        Teaching in levels
1.        Aims in levels
To different levels, teachers gave different aims. For example,

Level A        Level B        Level C
Words and expressions:
will,won’t, long,radio,stop,come out, lift, TV set        Be able to use them freely        Be able to use them        Be able to understand them and write them down
dialogues        Be able to make up new dialogues with their own words        Be able to recite them and act        Be able to read them
2.        Previewing texts in levels
Level A: Remember the words and texts, underline what they think of important, do the exercises in the workbook, be able to ask some questions.
Level B: Remember the words, read the text freely, do some of the exercises in workbook.
Level C: Be able to read the words and texts.
3.        Instructing in levels
This is the most important part of classroom teaching. When teachers teach the same contents, give different teaching. Begin with the lowest point, guide in levels, develop in different steps, arrange homework in levels, all the students attend it, each has a role to play. General and backward students can grasp them and the good students can study enough, teachers can fulfill the teaching aims in the end.
4.        Drilling in levels.
Level A: Be able to create suitable circumstances and make up new dialogues and act them out, or retell or rewrite the texts in their own words.
Level B: Recite the dialogues and important passages, make up dialogues or retell text in imitation of Level A.
Level C: Be able to read the texts fluently and correctly or understand the dialogues or texts.
5.        Ask questions in levels
Level A: a little more difficult
Level B: medium difficult
Level C: answer some easy questions or basic questions directly from the texts
   Sometimes they answer the same questions, the teacher let Level B answer first, then Level C, Level A.
   At the beginning of the class, one of Level A students make a short speech, Level B answer the teacher’s questions about the speech, then Level C repeat, thus every student have to use his head.
6.        Exercises in levels
When teachers design exercises, they can divide them into three levels.
Level A: They must do the exercises higher than the other two levels.
Level B: They must do the medium level, and try to do the highest level.
Level C: They must do the lowest level, try to do the medium level.
7.        Homework in levels
Oral work in levels is equal to drilling in levels, written work in levels is equal to exercises in levels.
8.        Revision in levels
Level A: Before teacher revises a unit, the students of Level A must design five kinds of exercises on a piece of paper. The next day they change the paper and do the exercises, after they finish the paper, they correct each other. If they have puzzles, they can ask the teacher. Then they can do some other exercises on their reference books.

Level B: They must do the exercises the teacher  give them, teacher will correct some of their work. Then the teacher will explain some of the exercises in class. After class they must revise what they have done.
Level C: They must remember the words and important language points, they must do some basic exercises, the teacher must explain to them clearly.
9.Tests and examinations in levels: Two kinds of paper: Paper A and Paper B. There are 100 marks in Paper A, they are basic exercises, Level C should do it; There are 50 marks in Paper B, Level A and Level B should do both the two papers, changing Paper A into 50 marks.
Ⅵ.Results
After about two months’ teaching, the marks of this class were greatly raised. The rate of high marks is the second of the grade, the average mark is the third of the grade, students were very happy. In class meeting they sang highly of this method. Students’ ability were improved, they were more interested in English.

Ⅶ.Advantages of teaching in levels
1.        Be able to content the demands of students of different levels, make students of different levels developed. Some students with good basis and ability of comprehend can be affected less by students of bad basic, give full play to their skill and conscious activity and they can learn more, learn more quickly and learn better. The students with bad basic can be given more care and help by the teacher, the teacher can know and solve their problems in study in time , make them no longer be in passive position or company the other students to read.
2.        It’s easy for teachers to teach in class. Because the students in the same level show no difference, the teacher can teach students in accordance with their aptitude, can change teaching bravely. Every class the teacher can give different aims and demands to different level’s students, so that the students can shoot the arrow at the target.
3.        The teacher can adjust the levels suitably after important examinations, bring competition into class, and arouse the students’ enthusiasm, make students be the owners of study.
4.        Be able to cut down or even remove the backwards students’ guidance after class, in this way either lesson the burden of the students or lessen the pressure of the teachers.
5.        Be able to make the good students better, make the clever students’ talent showing itself, make them be pillars of the state when they grow up.
6.        Owing to students’ English more or less improved, they study English more carefully, speaking and writing. In class they try their best to answer the teacher’s questions.
7.        To try to make the students learn well, teachers should learn more and do more , their teaching ability was raised little by little.
Ⅷ.Notes
1.        Teachers should appraise the students correctly.
2.        Teachers should give level’s students methods of learning English often.
3.        Teachers should spend much more time in preparing the lessons.
Ⅸ.Conclusion
With the developing of the world, there is more knowledge .To meet the need of the society and students’ interests, to know more about the world’s science and technology, students must have good English ability of listening ,speaking , reading and writing .Every student has different studying way and IQ, if we teachers treat everyone as the same ,many students won’t learn fully. So according to students’ energetic make students in the best state .Levels of English teaching is a good method facing all the students.
